Brewers ace Burnes roughed up by Astros’ energy bats

MILWAUKEE — With the Brewers weathering a number of accidents on their beginning pitching depth chart within the early going this season, Corbin Burnes is that rather more necessary to their rotation and general success.

Monday, nevertheless, was not the Milwaukee ace and 2021 National League Cy Young Award winner’s evening. Burnes gave up seven hits — together with 4 residence runs — and 5 runs in 5 innings vs. the Astros, because the Brewers dropped the collection opener 12-2 at American Family Field.

It’s the primary time Burnes has allowed 4 homers in a recreation in his profession. The final time he surrendered three was in 2019, when it occurred 4 occasions.

“For the most part, outside of the four home runs, we threw the ball well,” Burnes stated. “We were getting weak contact and got some punchouts. … We made mistakes to good hitters, and good hitters hit the ball out of the ballpark.”

Burnes walked a pair of Astros within the first inning — the robust lefty tandem of Yordan Alvarez and Kyle Tucker — however obtained via the inning unscathed. In the second, he left a 95-mph sinker thigh-high to Corey Julks, who crushed it 401 toes over the left-field wall.

“It’s a good lineup. They’re a hot team right now,” stated Burnes of the Astros, who’ve gained eight straight video games. “They’re playing well. They came out, swung the bat, pitched well, played good defense. They beat the crap out of us.”

Burnes has now made 10 begins this season, and after an up-and-down first few rotation turns (4.55 ERA via 5 outings), he threw 4 consecutive high quality begins coming into Monday.

“I would say he hasn’t put together a long string of good starts. I thought the two previous starts were pretty darn good,” supervisor Craig Counsell stated when requested of Burnes’ season thus far. “Probably just spraying the ball a little more than we’ve seen. The stuff is, by the way we look at it, really the same. Some misses, maybe a little bigger than usual. But nothing that’s like not really close to like putting himself right on track.”

Counsell burdened it’s not on Burnes – or anyone man – to carry up a complete workers because it goes via this attempting stretch.

“It’s not all on Corbin,” Counsell stated. “He’s got his job to do every fifth day, like every starter has to do. It’s not on one guy. None of this is on one guy. It’s on [playing well daily, [playing] well consistently. And Corbin is part of that, certainly. But it’s not on Corbin.”

“I can go out and throw once every five days,” Burnes stated. “The other guys can go out and throw once every five days. We’ve got to do what we can do when our name is called to go out there. I haven’t done my job for the most part this year, so I could definitely be better.”
