E book returned to library nearly 100 years late

A guide has been returned to a US library nearly 100 years late.

A History of the United States, by the American historian Benson Lossing, is believed to have been revealed in 1881.

It was on mortgage from St Helena Public Library in California, with a return date of 21 February 1927.

However, it was handed again only some days in the past – making it 96 years overdue. The man who returned the guide to the entrance desk shared no particulars of himself earlier than leaving.

However, he owed no cash to the library because it has not used fines since 2019, in keeping with library director Chris Kreiden.

Had the fantastic stood, the person would have needed to pay $1,756 (£1,413) following the library’s outdated nickel-a-day penalty (4p).

Inside, the library’s unique observe stays intact pertinently, saying: “This book may be kept for two weeks” and “injuries to books, and to books lost, must be paid for”.

St Helena Public Library posted the shocking story on its Instagram web page. The guide, which has tattered pages and a bruised entrance cowl, is displayed in a glass case to stop additional harm.

Ms Kreiden informed the St Helena Star newspaper: “It would be cool to put it on display someday but we haven’t figured out how to do that.”

Library workers imagine the guide to be one of many unique 540 volumes out there when the Free Public Library constructing was inaugurated again in 1892.
