CatholicVote advert blasts Dodgers for honoring drag-queen group that ‘mocks Catholic nuns’

A conservative Catholic group is airing an advert blasting the Los Angeles Dodgers for its choice to commend the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a troupe of drag queens who costume like nuns, accusing the staff of celebrating an “anti-Catholic hate group.”

CatholicVote Civic Action launched a 30-second advert that originally lauds the Dodgers for breaking the colour barrier in 1947 by hiring Jackie Robinson, the primary Black participant in Major League Baseball, and praised the administration as “trailblazers” whose “leadership, class and style of play were the envy of baseball.”

“But today, the Dodgers are putting it all at risk,” says the advert. “On June 16, a prominent anti-Catholic hate group will be honored on the field, a group that mocks Catholic nuns with vile sexual perversions, pole dances on crosses, blessings with sex toys, even sexualizing the Virgin Mary and the words of Jesus Christ.”

The Dodgers had been caught in a pickle after saying that the staff would current the drag group with its Community Hero Award on Pride Night, then rescinding the choice after pushback from Catholic leaders, then doubling again below stress from LGBTQ advocates.

“After much thoughtful feedback from our diverse communities, honest conversations within the Los Angeles Dodgers organization and generous discussions with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, the Los Angeles Dodgers would like to offer our sincerest apologies to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, members of the LGBTQ+ community and their friends and families,” the staff in a May 22 assertion.

Groups together with CatholicVote and the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights have urged followers to not attend the June 16 sport in protest, whereas a number of MLB gamers have additionally mentioned they disagree with honoring the Sisters, together with Dodgers star pitcher Clayton Kershaw.

Swinging again was the California State Assembly, which gave a standing ovation Monday to Michael Williams, who goes by the drag title “Sister Roma.”

“We’re so proud of Sister Roma and her work in the community, and I’m proud of California for standing strong to support LGBTQ people as our community is under assault in the rest of the country,” mentioned Democrat state Sen. Scott Wiener.

Several Republican legislators walked out in protest, and lots of of Catholics and Christians held a prayer vigil exterior, in accordance with the National Catholic Register.

The CatholicVote advert, a part of a $1 million media marketing campaign concentrating on the staff’s choice, is slated to run within the Los Angeles market Saturday through the staff’s sport.

“A fringe group like this honored, awarded, celebrated?” says the advert. “There is no equality in mocking women religious. No tolerance in hate, no pride in anti-Catholic bigotry. Mocking Christians is not the Dodger way.”

The Dodgers responded to the backlash final month by bringing again Christian Faith and Family Day, which was suspended through the pandemic, on the July 30 sport.
