Black bear kills Arizona man in ‘unusual’ predatory assault

An Arizona man was killed by a black bear Friday that mauled him outdoors of his semi-remote house after which dragged him away from the property.

The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office stated that Steven Jackson, 66, was ingesting espresso in his yard close to the Groom Creek space simply south of Prescott when the male bear launched its shock assault.

The bear then dragged Mr. Jackson 75 ft down into an embankment.

“Neighbors who heard the victim screaming tried to intervene through shouts and car horns, but the bear did not let go of Mr. Jackson until one neighbor was able to retrieve his rifle and shoot the bear to get him to disengage,” the sheriff’s workplace stated in a press launch.

“Unfortunately, by that time Mr. Jackson had succumbed to his horrible injuries,” the workplace assertion stated.

The wounded bear was discovered later and put down.

The Arizona Game and Fish and the sheriff’s workplace stated that the assault “appeared to be predatory in nature, is highly uncommon and unusual, with only one other fatal attack known since the mid 1980s.”

Bears normally keep away from human beings and solely assault if their cubs are in peril or in the event that they really feel threatened whereas foraging for meals or water. Authorities stated this assault didn’t match such patterns since there wasn’t something round Mr. Jackson’s house that may have prompted an assault, akin to a cooking website or a pond or a river.

Police stated there’s no menace to public security, and that Mr. Jackson’s house isn’t close to leisure campsites.

An investigation into the assault is underway.
