RICHMOND, Va. — Incumbent Virginia state Sen. Jeremy McPike narrowly defeated Del. Elizabeth Guzman in a Democratic nomination contest for a northern Virginia district.
The Associated Press known as the twenty ninth District race Monday. Guzman conceded over the weekend and McPike claimed victory.
McPike, who has served within the Senate since 2016, will head into the overall election season as the favourite within the Democratic-leaning district that covers elements of Prince William and Stafford counties.
He thanked Guzman for a “gracious” concession and for “running a spirited race focused on the communities we represent.”
“I’m looking forward to continuing to meet with voters and earn support in every corner of this district,” McPike mentioned in an announcement.
Guzman, probably the most progressive members of the House of Delegates, thanked her supporters and requested them to again McPike in November.
It’s not but clear who McPike will face within the common election. The Republican nomination contest within the twenty ninth District between Nikki Baldwin and Maria Martin was too near name.
While McPike held on to safe his get together’s nomination, 5 different incumbent senators – 4 Democrats and one Republican – had been ousted in final Tuesday’s major.
Every legislative seat will probably be on the poll within the fall, with management of each chambers of the politically divided General Assembly up for grabs in what’s anticipated to be a hard-fought contest.
