A controversial barge that’s set to accommodate 500 asylum seekers has arrived in Dorset.
The Bibby Stockholm departed Falmouth in Cornwall on Monday – one month not on time.
Its arrival in Dorset – which has been opposed by the native MP and residents – comes hours after the federal government’s Illegal Migration Bill handed the Lords.
The first asylum seekers are anticipated to board the Bibby Stockholm later this month.
Downing Street has defended the usage of barges to accommodate migrants – insisting it’s a cheaper various to accommodating them in motels.
The prime minister’s official spokesman instructed reporters: “I think it’s right for the public as a whole that we move away from a situation where £6m a day of taxpayers’ money is going towards housing these individuals in hotels.
“That’s not a superb use of cash and clearly that places unplanned stress on native areas as nicely.
“We think it is better to open specific sites designed to house immigrants that come in, done in a more planned way.
“That’s what we’re looking for to do with the Bibby Stockholm and that is what we’re looking for to do in different components of the nation – opening up websites to take the stress off native areas and to scale back the price.”
