A power knee damage has compelled Denis Shapovalov to step out of Toronto.

The Twenty second-ranked Canadian formally withdrew from his dwelling Masters 1000, the National Bank Open Presented by Rogers, which begins on Monday.

“I’m really disappointed to announce my withdrawal from the @nbotoronto,” Shapovalov posted on Instagram. “I’ve been doing everything possible to get my knee healthy and be able to compete but unfortunately it needs more time.

“There’s no larger honor than enjoying at your house match and I’ll actually miss enjoying in Toronto.”

Following his fourth-round Wimbledon loss to Roman Safiullin last month, Shapovalov conceded his knee pain was “insufferable” and said if he opted to rest the knee, rather than undergo surgery, then he would likely be sidelined at least two months.

“The minimal could be two months. Yeah, I imply, hopefully no surgical procedure. Obviously with surgical procedure it will be for much longer, however I might say the minimal could be two months,” Shapovalov said at Wimbledon, adding “in the direction of the tip of the match, I could not even stroll, not to mention play.”

After his Wimbledon departure, Shapovalov stated if he opts for relaxation, he would miss the U.S. summer time hard-court swing and attempt to comeback for the autumn indoor season.

“So maybe it is a good time to take a break, try to fix this, and come back for the fall,” Shapovalov stated. “But then again, I would be missing an important part of the season which I love to play, which is in North America.”

The Canadian left-hander joins 23-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, who withdrew final week citing fatigue, and defending champion Pablo Carreno Busta, who is constant his restoration from an elbow damage, in withdrawing from the Canadian Masters.
