Triathlon Ireland says it didn’t ‘sanction’ Ironman swim race through which two males died in Co Cork

Triathlon Ireland has mentioned its officers didn’t sanction a swim race through which two rivals died.

The males, of their 40s and 60s, obtained into problem in separate incidents in the course of the swimming leg of the Ironman occasion in Youghal, Co Cork on Sunday.

Triathlon Ireland chief government Darren Coombes mentioned officers didn’t sanction the swim race on account of “adverse conditions on the day”.

“Due to adversarial situations on the day, Triathlon Ireland technical officers confirmed to the race organisers that it was not potential to sanction the race.

“As there is an investigation ongoing, at this stage it would not be appropriate for us to make any further comment only to state that Triathlon Ireland will provide any assistance that the authorities require.”

Mr Coombes additionally named the 2 males who died as Ivan Chittenden and Brendan Wall.

“We reiterate our deepest condolences to the families,” he added.

“The triathlon community is a very close community and this loss has had a devastating effect on all of us.”

Cork County Council said in a statement it is “deeply saddened over the tragic lack of two race contributors in the course of the Ironman 70.3 Ireland, Cork 2023 occasion in Youghal immediately”.

The statement added: “Our deepest sympathies exit to the households and pals of the athletes at this extremely troublesome time.”
