Drew Barrymore crossing picket line, costing her the host function with Book Awards

Actress Drew Barrymore has been dropped as host of the upcoming National Book Awards after she introduced her speak present would proceed taping amid the Hollywood labor strikes.

The National Book Foundation stated it made its determination after discovering Ms. Barrymore is crossing the picket line.

“In light of the announcement that ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ will resume production, the National Book Foundation has rescinded Ms. Barrymore’s invitation to host the 74th National Book Awards Ceremony,” the corporate stated in a press release Tuesday.

The National Book Awards, slated to air Nov. 15, is without doubt one of the prime occasions for literature and publishing. Ms. Barrymore was probably the most well-known host the occasion has ever snagged.

“Our commitment is to ensure that the focus of the Awards remains on celebrating writers and books, and we are grateful to Ms. Barrymore and her team for their understanding in this situation,” the assertion continued.

Ms. Barrymore, whose speak present runs on CBS, started taping her upcoming season on Monday, regardless of a picket line forming exterior the studio. While the present doesn’t make use of unionized actors, who’re on strike, the present does have a number of Writers Guild of America members on workers. So if the present gives new materials, it’s working with nonunion labor.

Many writers and authors criticized Ms. Barrymore for crossing the picket line. She responded in an Instagram submit Sunday.

“I own this choice,” she wrote. “We are in compliance with not discussing or promoting film and television that is struck of any kind. We launched live in a global pandemic. Our show was built for sensitive times and has only functioned through what the real world is going through in real time.”

Her determination to proceed manufacturing regardless of the strikes stands in distinction to her determination to step away from internet hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards when the writers’ strike first broke in May.
