Wimbledon enlargement wins approval from native board. Plan contains new stadium and 38 different courts

WIMBLEDON, England — The All England Club’s plan to construct an 8,000-seat stadium and 38 different courts at Wimbledon that might enable the Grand Slam to carry its qualifying event on web site has gained approval from an area planning council.

The enlargement would happen on the previous web site of Wimbledon Park Golf Club, which the All England Club purchased in 2018. The Merton Council‘s planning committee authorized the proposal on Thursday night time, the council stated Friday.

Unlike the opposite three majors, qualifying for Wimbledon is at present held offsite – in close by Roehampton.



The plan would enable as much as 10,000 followers per day for the qualifying event. Club officers estimate the courts being prepared by 2030 on the earliest.

The proposed stadium features a retractable roof, giving Wimbledon a brand new present courtroom.

The plan nonetheless faces native opposition in addition to further approvals. The planning committee of the Wandsworth Council is at present reviewing it.
