Nike bails on reopening Portland retailer resulting from rampant theft

Nike confirmed Thursday it received’t attempt to reopen a long-closed location in Portland, Oregon, as a result of the shop has been stricken by repeated thefts.

The retailer quietly closed in fall 2022 amid a rash of brazen shoplifting incidents the place crooks would stroll out with armfuls of merchandise, in keeping with native NBC affiliate KGW-TV.

The sports retail large advised Mayor Ted Wheeler in February that the closure was resulting from “deteriorating public safety conditions and rapid escalation in retail theft.”

Nike requested Mr. Wheeler on the time if off-duty Portland cops might work safety for the shop — and Nike even provided to pay for the cops — however the mayor stated town didn’t have any officers to spare.

“We are reimagining Nike’s retail space, permanently closing our current location at 2650 NE Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and considering future locations as part of this community’s long term revitalization plan,” Nike stated in a press release obtained by the KGW. “True to our roots, we will seek the input of local community organizations and leaders to determine the best new location.”

Mr. Wheeler stated in a Friday assertion that he was “very disappointed” in Nike’s resolution, and added that town can’t lend off-duty officers to any Portland enterprise due to staffing shortages.

The Nike retailer initially opened in 1984 and finally moved to its present location in 2000.
