France rising as Baker’s shock rookie of season
HOUSTON -- Every spring, Astros supervisor Dusty Baker says he’s on the lookout for a shock rookie, somebody to step up and make an affect that was surprising coming into the season. Enter J.P. France, a 28-year-old, bespectacled right-hander who was perhaps seventh or eighth on the workforce’s beginning pitching depth chart in March.
Injuries to Lance McCullers Jr. within the spring and fellow starters Luis Garcia and José Urquidy a month into the season introduced France’s skills and his mustache into the limelight.
