Can’t get Taylor Swift tickets? See all of Swift’s eras on show at this costume exhibit

NEW YORK — Taylor Swift has been breaking data and delighting followers on the U.S. leg of her Eras Tour, a splashy celebration of her profession and new releases for the reason that pandemic.

It’s change into a notoriously powerful ticket to get.

But on the second ground of the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in New York City, followers can catch glimpses of Swift’s “eras” for less expensive. “Taylor Swift: Storyteller,” options dozens of costumes and objects spanning her music movies, excursions and awards present performances — from the lace robe she wore when performing “All Too Well” on the Red Tour to the “key to the castle” featured within the video for “Bejeweled.”

The objective, museum director Tim Rodgers stated, was to discover how Swift makes use of clothes and props to inform tales — virtually as a lot as she does lyrics. “It’s different than stars that use costumes or fashion in order to enhance themselves,” Rodgers stated. “Taylor Swift is using costumes and props like a vocabulary.”

Rodgers stated Swift’s workforce got here to MAD with the thought due to one other exhibit they hosted — “Queer Maximalism X Machine Dazzle” — that includes the work of artist, performer and costume designer Matthew Flower, often known as Machine Dazzle. “It was totally unexpected,” Rodgers stated.

“Taylor Swift: Storyteller” opened forward of Swift’s three-night cease close by at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. Like her live shows, the gathering walks guests by way of her genre- and decade-spanning profession. There’s the crystal-encrusted guitar she used when performing her 2010 album “Speak Now,” a hooded bodysuit she wore throughout her Reputation Stadium Tour, the striped T-shirt she wore in a 2020 photoshoot for “folklore.”

“She’s a visual storyteller. Everything she does … it feels very intentional,” stated Teresa Bocalan, a fan visiting the museum. “So it’s really cool to see those outfits up close.”

The exhibit, on show by way of Sept. 4, is accompanied by a playlist of Swift’s music movies — together with her brief movie for the ten minute model of “All Too Well” — that are projected on screens across the room. Lyrics scrawled in Swift’s handwriting adorn key partitions within the area.

But maybe the centerpiece of all of it is a newer piece of Swift’s lore: the flowing pink wedding ceremony gown she wore within the 2021 video for “I Bet You Think About Me (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault),” directed by Blake Lively and co-starring Miles Teller. The tune, that includes Chris Stapleton, was an addition to the re-released model of her 2012 album “Red.” Adorned with tulle roses, the gown was customized made for Swift by Nicole + Felicia Couture.

In the video, the pink robe is a showstopper — or, extra actually, a marriage stopper.

In the exhibit, it appears to carry the identical energy.

“We had people come in and look at that red wedding dress over there and literally start to cry,” Rodgers stated of the exhibit’s opening weekend. “It is, for a lot of people, almost like a religious experience to see this clothing that Taylor once wore.”

“I’m also super excited to see the ‘I Bet You Think About Me’ dress over there,” stated Greta Myers, a scholar on the Fashion Institute of Technology. “We haven’t looked at it yet. I’m saving it.”
