President Joe Biden and first girl Jill Biden will host a Juneteenth live performance in a “celebration of community, culture and music,” the White House introduced Wednesday.
The live performance, to be held June 13, can be on the South Lawn of the White House. During the occasion, the White House says it would “uplift American art forms that sing to the soul of the American experience” as a part of Black Music Month.
Artists who can be featured embrace Tony Award winner Audra McDonald, singer and speak present host Jennifer Hudson, and Cliff “Method Man” Smith, a member of the legendary hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan.
Juneteenth marks when the final enslaved individuals within the United States realized they have been free — which occurred June 19, 1865, when Union troopers informed enslaved Black individuals in Galveston, Texas, information of their freedom. It grew to become a federal vacation in 2021.
“This is a day of profound weight and profound power, a day in which we remember the moral stain, the terrible toll that slavery took on the country and continues to take,” Biden mentioned two years in the past as he signed laws, backed by overwhelming bipartisan margins in Congress, that established Juneteenth as a federal vacation.
