Oprah Winfrey portrait unveiled on the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery

Award-winning tv host and media mogul Oprah Winfrey unveiled a portrait of herself on the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery Wednesday.

Winfrey joins a prestigious assortment of portraits on the gallery together with Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, and former President Barack Obama.

Winfrey commissioned Chicago-based portrait artist Shawn Michael Warren to color her portrait after seeing one in all his newest works he helped co-create: a life-size mural of Winfrey in Chicago’s West loop, near the place the Oprah Winfrey Show was filmed.

“I thank you so much for capturing the strength, for capturing the joy, for capturing the sense of contentment that I feel,” Winfrey stated to Warren after her portrait was hung up contained in the gallery.
