Deserted walrus pup given fixed cuddles to attempt to maintain him alive

An deserted walrus pup is receiving round the clock “cuddling” from welfare employees attempting to maintain him alive.

The unnamed Pacific walrus was discovered alone miles from the ocean on Alaska’s North Slope and brought to Alaska SeaLife Centre.

Weighing a whopping 90kg, the “cuddling” strategy is an effort to imitate the near-constant care a calf would get from its mom within the wild.

It offers the month-old walrus an “option to have a warm body to lean up against” which employees stated he has been “taking advantage of almost constantly”.

He can also be being fed each three hours.

The calf was discovered by oil area employees about 4 miles (6.4km) away from the Beaufort Sea – the place the breed are sometimes noticed.

It stays unknown how he grew to become deserted.

Although a walrus monitor was discovered close by, there have been no indicators of adults.

In the wild, Pacific walrus depend on their moms for the primary two years of their lives, sparking concern for the deserted calf.

The centre stated the walrus will probably be beneath 24-hour look after a number of weeks – along with his well being, urge for food and progress monitored.
