Temporary limitations are to be put in on an Edinburgh road after sat-nav errors have despatched a spate of drivers down a set of steps.

Images of stranded motorists have been extensively shared on social media after GPS software program didn't acknowledge the steps added to Greenside Lane final 12 months.

City of Edinburgh Council stated Google Maps has since up to date its instructions, whereas a request for a correction has been made to Apple Maps.

While this replace is awaited, short-term limitations shall be put in this week.

Councillor Scott Arthur, transport and setting convener, stated: "The footpath on this space is extremely busy, so these incidents are actually regarding.

"While we would expect drivers to use common sense in a situation like this, we are going to install temporary barriers this week to prevent it happening again."

Greenside Lane, subsequent to The Theatre Royal Bar and alongside from Edinburgh Playhouse, was stated to have been blocked off to visitors "some time ago" forward of the steps being put in as a part of the Trams to Newhaven tramline extension scheme.

Coun Arthur stated the work was in compliance with the town's road design steerage and much like different set-ups throughout Edinburgh, similar to on the Lawnmarket.

He added: "No issues were raised as part of the road safety audit for the project and Google Maps was recently updated to reflect the new layout and a request for a correction has been sent to Apple Maps.

"Sat-nav is an extremely great tool, nevertheless it's no substitute for frequent sense. Cars and vehicles do not go down steps."
