Singer Chesney Hawkes despatched tearful voice notes to his household group chat because the airplane he was on plunged 20,000ft in the direction of the bottom.

The 51-year-old musician was on an Aegean Airlines Airbus A320 along with his spouse and 156 different individuals flying from Thessaloniki, Greece, to Barcelona on Monday.

The flight declared a common emergency because it handed over Italy while en path to Spain, in keeping with Aviation Source News.

The plane was then diverted to Naples International Airport as the character of the emergency remained unclear.

'We had been each crying'

Speaking to The Sun, Mr Hawkes mentioned: "We thought we were going down. Our ears hurt and babies were crying. The pilot came over the loudspeaker and said 'emergency descent - brace'.

"One of the stewardesses was in a foetal place on the ground making an attempt to get a masks on whereas additionally making an attempt to speak to us over the intercom.

"The plane was rattling and banked so steeply we looked out and could see the sea. We thought we were going into the water. Krissy and I looked at each other and hugged."

The father of three mentioned he left voice messages on his telephone to the household group out of worry that he and his spouse wouldn't make it.

He added: "We left a voice message on the family WhatsApp group. We were both crying and told the kids how proud we were of them and how much we loved them.

"There was no different info. The stewards had been crying and everybody round us was hysterical. Then instantly the airplane stopped rattling and the descent slowed."

After the stewardess announced an emergency landing, Mr Hawkes said: "Everyone was terrified".

He added: "People had their legs and arms braced towards the seat in entrance of them. In the top the touchdown was OK, if a bit bumpy."

Mr Hawks mentioned passengers cheered loudly after the airplane landed safely and likewise shared his gratitude on Twitter for the pilot that managed to get everybody down safely.

The singer mentioned the pilot was a "hero" and added: "All the crew were great, even the stewardess who had a moment.

"And fortunately we managed to delete the WhatsApp message once we landed earlier than any of them listened to it."

He tweeted a picture of himself with the pilot, captioned: "Thank you to all that saved their heads cool, particularly #captainfantastic for touchdown our airplane safely right this moment.

"This was not what we expected today, but it's made us appreciate life and those we love just that little bit more."
