D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee, a 30-year veteran of the pressure, is leaving to take a put up with the FBI, Mayor Muriel E. Bowser introduced Wednesday.

According to at least one report, the chief, who took over management of the Metropolitan Police Department in 2020, will develop into an assistant director with the FBI.

His departure comes as town has struggled to handle a spike in violent crime. The chief has clashed in latest months with members of town council who pushed for adjustments to the felony code that diminished penalties for some felonies.

Chief Contee and the mayor pushed again on the adjustments, characterised by critics as “soft on crime,” however they have been overruled by the council. Congress then overruled the council.
