An escaped lioness has been shot lifeless in South Korea after an emergency search involving greater than 100 police, firefighters and hunters.

The alarm was raised after the proprietor of a farm in southeastern Goryeong county discovered the cage empty early on Monday morning.

Dozens of campers close by have been evacuated whereas the animal, named Sasoonee, was unaccounted for.
