A pair of "shocking" leather-based hotpants worn by Freddie Mercury, have offered at public sale for £18,000.

The Queen star wore the black leather-based shorts throughout a number of exhibits, together with Birmingham and Toronto gigs in 1980 - the peak of the band's fame.

Mercury died aged 45 in 1991 from AIDS-related problems.

The 28in (71cm) waist shorts get a point out within the band's authorised biography, Queen: As It Began.

In a chapter about Queen breaking America, it says: "Freddie determined to attempt to shock the viewers together with his stage outfit for the encore: the shortest, tightest pair of black leather-based shorts he might discover.

"They didn't leave much to the imagination, but no one complained..."

They had initially been purchased on the Queen Fan Club Auction in Southport, in 1993.
