French police have opened an investigation after an Ireland fan was allegedly gang raped in Bordeaux through the opening weekend of the Rugby World Cup, in keeping with experiences in French media.

Police are searching for three males in reference to the assault.

A spokesperson for Irish police informed Sky News they're liaising with native authorities in France.

"Members of An Garda Síochána currently deployed in France for the duration of the Rugby World Cup tournament to assist Irish people visiting France are liaising with local authorities in relation to an alleged incident," the spokesperson stated.

"The investigation is a matter for French police. An Garda Síochána has no further comment at this time."

Around 600,000 rugby supporters from overseas are anticipated to go to France over the approaching weeks through the match, in keeping with the nation's police.

Local prosecutors in Bordeaux informed Sky News an investigation had been opened and was ongoing.

"The woman was found and helped by two rugby supporters," the prosecutor added.
