AKRON, Ohio (AP) - The eight law enforcement officials who shot Jayland Walker final summer time used extreme pressure once they fired 94 bullets at him throughout a foot chase and took part in a “culture of violence and racism” inside Akron’s police division, in line with a lawsuit filed in Ohio federal courtroom Friday.

Months after a grand jury declined to indict the unnamed officers within the dying of Walker, a 25-year-old Black man, his household is looking for at the least $45 million in damages from the officers, the town of Akron and metropolis officers, in line with a press launch.

During a routine site visitors cease on June 27, 2022, law enforcement officials fatally shot Walker after he fired a single bullet from his automotive, then ran from the officers, in line with a state investigation. He left the gun in his still-moving automotive.

His dying gained nationwide consideration and roiled one more metropolis amid heightened tensions with police over the killing of a Black man that began with a site visitors cease.

The officers fired almost 100 bullets at Walker in lower than 7 seconds when he refused to place up his palms and appeared to achieve into his waistband, believing him to be armed and a “deadly threat,” the state investigation stated.

Police officers violated Walker’s rights to freedom from extreme pressure below the fourth modification once they shot him in a hail of gunfire regardless that Walker was unarmed, in line with the lawsuit.

The lawsuit additional alleges that for years, and with out penalties, the town of Akron, Mayor Daniel Horrigan and Chief of Police Stephen Mylett have knowingly allowed Akron law enforcement officials to interact in “violent behavior” that “disproportionately involves African Americans.”
