LONDON — London police stated a managed explosion was carried out as a precaution outdoors Buckingham Palace late Tuesday after a person was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon.

The Metropolitan Police power stated officers arrested the person after he approached the palace gates and threw gadgets suspected to be shotgun cartridges into the palace grounds. A bag that police deemed suspicious was discovered within the suspect’s possession, the division stated.

“Officers worked immediately to detain the man and he has been taken into police custody,” Chief Superintendent Joseph McDonald stated in a press release. “There have been no reports of any shots fired, or any injuries to officers or members of the public.”

King Charles III and Camilla, the queen consort, weren't believed to be at Buckingham Palace on the time of the arrest. Palace officers declined to remark, saying the incident was a police matter.

Cordons had been erected within the space. Police stated officers remained on the scene and investigations had been ongoing.
