WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland’s prime minister says his authorities won't carry its embargo on imports of Ukrainian grain as scheduled Friday as a result of it could harm Polish farmers.

“Poland will not allow Ukraine grain to flood us,” Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki mentioned Tuesday on the social media platform X, previously generally known as Twitter.

“Regardless of the decisions of the clerks in Brussels, we will not open up our borders,” Morawiecki mentioned within the midst of intensive campaigning for Oct. 15 parliamentary elections.

Poland, Hungary and Slovakia, in settlement with the European Union, imposed an embargo on Ukrainian farm produce from April till Sept. 15 to stop a glut of their house markets that will harm their farmers. Only transit of sealed items is allowed in an effort to assist Ukraine ship its produce abroad as Russia blocks its common export routes.

Morawiecki posted his feedback shortly earlier than the Cabinet was to debate the matter. The European Parliament is also to debate the difficulty.

EU Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski mentioned Tuesday he's making efforts to have the embargo prolonged. Wojciechowski is Poland’s former agriculture minister.

Some leaders of Polish farm teams have been to attend the EU Parliament debate, together with Michal Kolodziejczak, who's an opposition candidate within the Oct. 15 elections.

Poland has been supporting neighboring Ukraine with army and humanitarian help because it fights Russia’s invasion, however following farmer protests, Warsaw has been adamant in banning imports of Ukrainian agriculture merchandise.
