Happy Slam rise turned excruciating finish for Alexander Zverev.
Olympic gold-medal champion Zverev got here agonizingly near a maiden Australian Open remaining solely to blow a two-set lead and bow to rival Daniil Medvedev 5-7, 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 6-3 in a gut-wrenching 4 hour, 18-minute loss.

Empowered by his upset of No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz within the quarterfinals, his first profession Top 5 win in a Slam, Zverev raced out to a two-set lead tonight. But the toll of successful a few fifth-set tiebreaker, four-hour battles—Zverev edged qualifier Lukas Klein in a fifth-set breaker in spherical two then out-dueled Nineteenth-seeded Briton Cameron Norrie in a fifth-set tiebreaker within the fourth spherical—left the German depleted over the ultimate two units tonight.
In the aftermath of his painful parting, Zverev stated he misplaced the match due to sickness and fatigue and never due to his tennis.
"Kind of I lost it because of a physical state, not because of tennis," stated Zverev, who was taking part in to hitch Boris Becker and Rainer Schuettler because the third German man to achieve the AO singles remaining. "That is, for me, disappointing. That's probably the first time or one of the first times in my career that that has happened.

Two of the hardest defeats of Zverev's profession have come after he let two-set leads slip away.
Dominic Thiem rallied previous Zverev 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(6) in a gripping, grueling 2020 US Open remaining to seize his first profession Grand Slam championship.
Zverev has been beneath the scrutiny highlight this month with the information he'll face a trial in Berlin in May to reply assault allegations from his ex-girlfriend and mom of his baby.
Asked immediately if the assault allegations and controversy hampered his focus, Zverev, who has repeatedly denied all abuse and assault allegations made by a number of ex-girlfriends, stated it hasn't impacted his play.
"No, because I have said it before: Anyone who has a semi-decent IQ level understands what's going on," Zverev stated. "I hope that most of you guys do. I'm fine with it."
