Ecuador proclaims a state of emergency in all of its prisons after violent clashes

QUITO, EcuadorEcuador on Tuesday introduced a state of emergency in all of its prisons after a collection of violent incidents together with shootings and explosions occurred in one in all its most harmful prisons.

The measure – the second state of emergency that President Guillermo Lasso has ordered in lower than 24 hours – can be in impact for 60 days and orders the rapid mobilization of the navy and police in an effort to regain management of the prisons.

The announcement comes after clashes erupted in Litoral jail on Saturday afternoon and escalated into the early hours of Sunday, with gunshots and explosions heard by individuals in close by residential areas.
