EU member Slovenia overwhelmingly defeats Moscow ally Belarus for a seat on the UN Security Council

UNITED NATIONS — In an election reflecting opposition to Russia’s struggle in opposition to Ukraine, European Union member Slovenia overwhelmingly defeated Moscow’s shut ally Belarus on Tuesday for a seat on the U.N. Security Council beginning in January.

The race between the 2 members of the U.N.’s East European group was the one contested election for 5 seats on the U.N.’s strongest physique, and was intently watched due to the 2 nations’ opposing views on Russia’s Feb. 24, 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
