Jane Birkin: Stars pay tribute to singer, actress and elegance icon at her funeral

Singer Vanessa Paradis and the French president’s spouse, Brigitte Macron, have been among the many well-known faces who paid tribute to singer and actress Jane Birkin at her funeral in Paris on Monday.

The British-French fashion icon, who lent her identify to the Hermes Birkin purse, died earlier this month on the age of 76.

The London-born star was discovered at her house in Paris by her carer.

She was best-known for her 1969 hit single “Je t’aime… moi non plus” with then-husband Serge Gainsbourg.

Ms Birkin’s daughters Charlotte Gainsbourg, 51, and Lou Doillon, 40, led mourners into the Church of Saint-Roch.

“I already feel the vacuum she is leaving. This is my mother, our mother,” stated Ms Gainsbourg.

“Mother, thank you for not being ordinary and reasonable,” Ms Doillon stated.

Hundreds of individuals lined the streets exterior the church the place they listened to her music, with indicators studying “Jane Forever” and “Thank You Jane Birkin”, and watched the ceremony on an enormous display.

Birkin’s songs, together with “La Javanaise”, performed via audio system throughout the French capital.

Film stars Catherine Deneuve, Charlotte Rampling and Sandrine Kiberlain have been amongst those that attended the service.

Other mourners included singers Alain Souchon, Etienne Daho, who composed her final album, and Matthieu Chedid.

French President Emmanuel Macron led tributes when Ms Birkin’s demise was introduced, saying: “Because she embodied freedom, because she sang the most beautiful words of our language, Jane Birkin was a French icon.”

In France, the place she had lived because the late Sixties, she grew to become a widely known and much-loved determine for her songs, roles in dozens of movies and the stance she took on a spread of points together with ladies’s and LGBT rights.
